A top 50 contender, based on being the MVP of the G1, and being super great beating up young lions. The Yoshi-Hashi, Ishii, Tanahashi, Goto, Ibushi, and ZSJ matches are all ***1/2+ for me. Also great in every Japan Dad tag match.

While I don't think he had any ****+ matches, I really enjoyed his G1 run. The ZSJ and Fale matches in particular were great emotional performances and he was good in matches like Goto where he would get his dander up. Would need to catch up on the undercard tags he was in, but probably a good chance he makes the lower half of the list.

As of this moment right now, Nagata is a Top 30 guy for me. Unreal performance in the G1 and I think the Tanahashi match is as good as any New Japan main event this year, better than some of them. Top notch stuff

For his G1 alone he'll be making my list, but that's about all I've seen this year from him because pre-intermission tags aren't really enticing to me when there's so much wrestling out there to watch. I do want to check out some of his Lions Gate work though.

I'm not sure if there's any wrestler out there this year I was emotionally invested in like Yuji Nagata. It took me years to realize, but I fell in love with him at this year's G1. Besides that Makabe match I ranked all of his matches **** or higher. **** 1/4 against Tanahashi and even **** 1/2 against Ishii. Incredible stuff. He has been great in the traditional tag team matches as well.

The emotional investment is what really makes him for me, yeah. I'm a huge sucker for the "old guy clinging to his spot in the world" stories and Nagata's been milking that for a while. Here in 2017 he's been able to flesh that out to a larger degree than in the past few years with the announcement of his final G1. The Tanahashi match is definitely rough around the edges but was the sort of moment that will stick in my mind for a long time. I didn't love the Ishii and Makabe matches like I thought I was going to, but a surprisingly great Ibushi bout took their place and that along with the Tanahashi match might be enough to sneak him onto my list. I'll have to go out of my way to find any undercard gems, especially against those rookies.

Re-watching his runs in the New Japan Cup and G-1, Nagata has had a really sneaky good year. Was the highlight in almost every single one of his matches, and he was wrestling the best guys in the world.

Outstanding all year but I also care more about the next Lion's Gate card than I do the Sakura Genesis card. His match on Project8 with Daisuke Kanehira is a gem.
