There is a thing I do when I start putting together these sorts of wrestler lists that EXTEND a period of time that I don't do for year-long lists. I don't know if it is fair or makes sense but the more time I'm working with, the more room for "error". I don't know if it is because odds are I have seen less of the overall pie when extending over a decade versus a year or that I am working with so much more data I need to find quick bites of info I can extrapolate. Things that I look at more in a decade list include:
I bring this up here for Cesaro because he really hits buckets 2 and 4 here. He has consistently been towards the upper echelon of wrestlers in the WWE, a promotion I don't care all that much for. The last bit there HURTS him as I think anyone working in that dire company is going to have trouble rising above folks in situations that I preferred. Then you have him being likely the best tag wrestler of the year. Was part of very good/great teams with Tyson Kidd, Jack Swagger, and Sheamus. Three very different skillsets and skill levels and he has darn good runs with all of them throughout the decade. Cesaro's 2013 I think helps give strong evidence that he probably could have also been the ultimate workhorse champion sort of wrestler. That was a role that WWE never felt was needed because they just had everyone do it as some point. During that time, every week pretty much Cesaro was guaranteed a banger. Plus you got the Regal match there which is one of the all-time great wrestling Christmas presents. That was a role that WWE never felt was needed because they just had everyone do it as some point.
- Did they fill a certain role in a specific promotion/scene extremely well?
- Were they a consistent presence throughout the decade? Maybe not be a top contender every year but making my "list".
- How many folks did they give their best match to during the time period?
- Were they the best at a specific style/type of wrestling?
