I'll go there since Sam is too scared to. Let's be honest - he's had a much better year this year than he had last year. Sure he's spent a lot of his time doing creative for half the indies on Earth, but in terms of producing good, hard hitting, interesting matches he's had a better 2017. His work in AAW this year has genuinely been great. The Candice, Kongo Kong, Low Ki, Elgin, and Juvi were all great matches in their own ways. He was excellent over Mania weekend working in a bunch of different spots. He's reckless and exciting live in a way that very few wrestlers are or have ever been. Does he occasionally dabble in comedy stuff I dislike? Yes. Are there other issues that might make people want to drop him from their ballots? Yes. Has he had a demonstrably better year than jokers like Nakamura? Yes.

I have watched Sami Callihan for like 8 years, and I still can't figure out if I like his matches

It's a shame his matches from LU last year don't count. Had some really good brawls.

Not to say he hasn't been great, he just hasn't had the variety of performances of last year which goes a long way. His matches against Low Ki and Kongo Kong are tremendous. Being baked into OI4K trios match sort of limits him. Hasn't happened a ton but enough where it takes away from the amount of matches I want to watch from him. I typically love the Callihan formula but this year seems to be the one I am having the most difficulty finding stand out versions of the formula.

Terrible take, likely fabricated for political reasons.

I'm not sure if he'll make my list or not. There's been a few matches of his I've liked this year, but none of them were really because of what he did.

He will make my list, but no idea where. I still need to see a lot of AAW before I make a real decision. Really loved that SPPT/JML match though.

Callihan's been so weird this year. I hate almost all of what he's done on the creative end of every promotion he's touching right now. All of his matches are the same. His comedy stuff is atrocious. Sometimes I think his heel work is atrocious. I hate most of his crew and worry that he's making the best members of his crew worse. He's working a style to such a degree that it seems to be actively detrimental to his health, and was especially so over Mania weekend.
But on top of all of that... he surprises me in weird ways. Sure, it's not surprising that he'd have a great match with Low Ki, a match I think is top ten match of the year level stuff without the third act problems. It's not surprising that he has loads and loads of slightly-above-average sprints that I find myself enjoying even with the antics I find eye-rolling. But when he has a super serious main event title match in AAW against Michael Elgin that I somehow... love? That's surprising to me. Throw in a few other surprisingly good bouts like the Cage and Keith three-way from PWG that had "not for me" written all over it and this guy's making it to a decent spot on my list, warts and all. Not sure if it beats his 2016. Not sure if I still think his 2016 is as good as I thought. But whatever the case, he's still doing it for me this year against the odds.
