Despite the Styles feud, still had a good first half of the year.

Unless he turns it up from here on out, there's a chance he just misses the cut. While I do think the Backlash and Summerslam matches with A.J. are a bit underrated, neither were brilliant and the rest of the feud was bereft of chemistry. He had some OK matches with Jericho and a very good match with Reigns where he was pretty clearly a supporting character, but that's about it.

He really needs more than what he has, because right now he's probably not making my list. If the Shane match is good then I'll reconsider.

His best match was with Reigns at Rumble. I've enjoyed his stuff with Jericho and Styles, but it didn't feature him in his best possible light. The Shane match will give him his best chance in a while to showcase him in a match type that he excels in.

Owens is one of my absolute favorites so I'm really disappointed in the year he's having. He's got some bangers like the Reigns match and the Jericho stuff was all fine, but the Styles feud was a wet fart throughout (part of that was on the booking, but it also just didn't seem like they had any chemistry). He's got a good volume of solid TV matches and stuff that will keep him on my list, but he'll likely be middle of the pack in 2017 after a few years of being in my top 10.

I would like to point out that Kevin Owens may be the most frustrating wrestler in the world for me.
He's real good when he tries. Excellent brawler.
But my god, the chinlocks and the poor attempts at comedy is so, so bad.

The Reigns match at the Rumble was very good. The Shane HIAC was a crazed spectacle and one of the most surreal matches of the year and I think he deserves credit for how he played that match. The Jericho matches were actually better than I would have guessed, though I didn't care for the feud the way others did, and there is zero chance I'd ever watch them again.
The Styles feud was bad, even if it the matches weren't terrible. Just way below the standard of AJ, and when you've got AJ having a legit very good/great series with Jinder it makes it all the more unflattering to KO. This won't be popular in some quarters, but I could probably name as many or more Jinder matches I liked this year and I'm NOT one of the Jinder People.
I'm sure he had some good ones but I can think of no stand out tv matches from him this year. Zero. He was totally flat on SD and did zero that jumped off the page other than headbutting Vince. Often he seemed to be a drain on the show.
So he has a couple of really good performances in plunder brawls, one of which is against the best guy in the company, and the other of which was a free for all against the bosses kid where they got to do shit that no one else could. And the rest of the year is just waiting around to see if he can deliver anything that pops. He utterly failed. No chance for my ballot

I'd add to the "KO is good in brawls" take with the MITB match. Thought he probably had the best performance of the match along with AJ which makes sense because dude LOVES destroying himself in ladder matches.
But yeah even as a big KO fan it's hard for me to justify him in my top 50 (he'll probably still find somewhere on my list). I do love some performances he's had but it's easily his worst year in recent memory. Seemingly huge regression.

I wonder how much the post Mania comment from Vince that was shown on his 365 episode affected his confidence (I also wonder if that was actually real, staged or selectively edited). He definitely had a down year compared to last year. I probably liked the AJ matches more than most, but they were obviously not as good as you'd expect.
No clue where he goes next year-a full time team with Sami, a breakup and renewed feud, member of a D Bryan led faction-but 2017 was a mixed bag at best.
