What a weird year this man has had so far. While the Cody feud and various other parts of the Bullet Club infighting, which has been his main focus of 2018, didn't produce anything worth while in terms of workrate outside of the Buck/Lovers match, he's somehow found a way to sneak some killer matches in this year. A good part of that is because of his G1, which gave us the Ibushi and the Ishii matches, and then also managed to get a decent amount of stuff in that aren't MOTY contenders for me but still very good like against Naito and Jericho.

My number 1 last year and unless he absolutely starts stinking it up from here on out, is at the very least a lock for the top 10. The Young Bucks match is obviously the Golden Lovers match that has gotten the most love, but pretty much every match with Ibushi has been worth watching. He had a killer G1 with MOTYC's against Naito, Ishii, and Ibushi while also producing strong matches against SANADA, Goto, and Sabre. Then there's the Okada match which is an absolute masterpiece and legitimate MOTDC. He may very well end up being my number 1 again when all is said and done.

Kenny's a frustrating wrestler for me because at his best (vs. Ishii, vs. Naito, vs. the Bucks) few wrestlers make me as excited to watch him as he does, but he's still also maybe the corniest fucking wrestler on the planet. Sometimes that corniness works in his favor (again, the Bucks match is phenomenal) but most of the time (the never-ending Cody feud) I just want him to rein it in.

The Cody match is indeed the biggest mark against him, although I thought it started off as a rather decent match until the overbooking at the halfway point.

Sometimes that corniness works in his favor (again, the Bucks match is phenomenal) but most of the time (the never-ending Cody feud) I just want him to rein it in. This encapsulates my struggle with properly considering him. On paper, he's probably had more great matches than anyone this year especially at the highest levels. I loved the Jericho match, thought the Bucks match was brilliant and his high end G1 stuff was all top ten matches of the year for me. But, the title win has gotten so much more hype than it deserves (it's not even his best match this year, much less match of the decade), the "Best Bout" gimmick during a tournament just came off super lame and so far, and this isn't his fault, his title reign hasn't meant a whole lot. The Ishii and Pentagon matches are both intriguing and potentially great and may force my hand to rate him number one if they deliver. I don't think I've ever disliked someone considered so great ever before and it's a very odd place to be.

I have him with a ***** match and 3 ****3/4 matches this year (vs. Ishii, vs. Naito, vs. Okada & vs. the Bucks) but at the same time there's almost no one who infuriates me on a day to day basis like he does. I have no clue how to rate him, it's a debate I've been having ever since I started trying to at least get a top 20 nailed down. He has some really high top end stuff, but then at the same time many of his showcase singles matches are also my LEAST favorite matches of the year (both Cody matches but especially the second one, which might be my least favorite IWGP Heavyweight title match in history). Right now I'm leaning toward like bottom of the top 25, because I can't see putting someone with his top end stuff any lower than that, but I really thought his G1 run outside of those aforementioned two matches and a **** Goto match (that I thought Goto dragged him to kicking and screaming) was hideous, filled with ** or lower crap. Watching him pisses me off more than almost anyone else in wrestling even though he's clearly capable of having really high end stuff with the right opponents.

I think my biggest problem with Omega is that he doesn't remotely come off as likable, and he's playing a babyface workhorse champ, who's always supposed to be likable. And he's either playing that character or playing a cocky heel, which is not his best trait. This doesn't change the fact he's one of the greatest athletes I've ever seen in wrestling, and capable of creating incredible finishing stretches and drama in his matches in a way almost no one else can. He also has some undisputed classics and moments, especially the Ishii match and the busted/bloody lip after the finish. The Golden Lovers re-union has also given him some quality variety, with several great matches coming from that. So I'm stuck in two minds on Omega, one where the volume and high end matches are there, but the unlikability of his character makes me fail to really connect with them.
