His last title run earlier this year feels much like John Cena's random title run in 2017-more symbolic than an actual title reign. In the ring, he's been mostly 'very good' as opposed to great which shows how high up he was before and that he's clearly on the downside of his peak now. The Omega WK match and the Dallas match with Okada are pretty much the only stand outs and he's had way too many matches with ZSJ (with whom he has not such great chemistry). Not sure how much the rest of his G1 will help him, but absent something great or terrible, will probably land in the middle to bottom half of my top 50.

Whereas last year felt more like Tanahashi thriving in big match settings while struggling with lower-tier wrestlers, this year has felt like an improvement. Granted, he still wasn't saddled with the worst G1 block ever, but he's managed to have some really standout performances apart from the occasional main event spot against Okada or Kenny. He's also someone who clearly understands his limitations and has done an impressive job putting together compelling matches around the concept that he's just not the same guy he was 5-6 years ago.
