If I turned in a WDKW ballot today, Fenix would be my #1. He continue to hit huge dives and take some wild bumps, but this year his sense of timing and pacing in matches seems to have improved, or he is just being given opportunities to show it. Fenix's 2017 started great, with the Elgin match in AAW and then the tag w/ACH vs. Unbreakable Machines a few weeks later and then some very fun matches over Wrestlemania weekend (I don't think anybody is going to get much out of the Hardy Boys in 2017, especially when they are appearing on two PPVs the next two nights). I need to catch up on his AAW matches but he stands out in almost every match in The Crash or other indies I have seen.
The Lucha Bros. vs. Black Terry & Skayde match is one of my favorite matches of the year, and is a match that shows Fenix's improved (or spotlighted) timing and storytelling abilities. The match starts with the Lucha Brothers just trying to out-wrestle the two old guys, as they should be able to do, but Terry & Skayde continue to hang in there. The Lucha Brothers get frustrated and start taking cheap shots here and there until it escalates into the Lucha Brothers just doing whatever it takes to win, with Terry & Skayde responding in kind. A cool little story that makes for an excellent match, and one that shows Fenix can do more than just hit big dives.
Fenix was even able to get a 3-star match out of Marty Scurll.
Here are the Fenix matches I have at 4-stars or higher. The last one Fenix doesn't stand out too much, but I really liked War Machine in it:
These two are also really good, with Fenix in particular standing out:
Jeff Cobb, Rocky Lobo,Rey Fenix vs. Demus, Juventud Guerrera, Super Crazy
