New forum, still the same #1 wrestler in the world.
Going to keep it short and sweet. Davey Starr is the best babyface in the world right now. If you don't believe me watch his match against WALTER from 16 Carat and get ready to be proven WRONG!There is something about his eyes. Those things will pierce through you and make you feel things you never expected to feel.
I like ticking off boxes for top contenders and one of them is, has worked a variety of different types of matches. CHECK! While you have an elite babyface performance against WALTER, you also get to see him work a match based on limb selling against Corey Hollis, a bloody brawl/spotfest against Joey Janela, and total coke inspired sprint against Jay Freddie. He also has a bit of an amateur background, or at least incorporates it into his work, which pops me when he goes against someone like Zack Sabre Jr. or Matt Riddle. Both those matches happening in CZW where for a period of time was being treated as the most important dude on the roster. Starr also having prominent roles in Beyond and wXw is a big plus in his favor. He's popped up in the AAW territory and can't wait to see his TPI weekend.
Starr is a stud.

I wouldn't go as far to say he's a #1 contender or the best babyface in the world, but he's been very impressive this year when I've seen him and I'll have him in my top half for sure. Unfortunately I've only managed to see his work in wXw (outside of his SSS16 weekend) but he's been a highlight for that promotion this year whether it be in the Shotgun title mix or tagging with Jurn Simmons to go against Ringkampf. He's a guy going places for sure.
I would like to see that ZSJ match from CZW.

I think he suffers among most for having a really spread out resume. Outside of his really great WXW stuff, you really have to jump around to see a lot of him. Even his stuff for the "prestige" indies is really underrated. I loved the ZSJ match from SSS16, and his match against Keith Lee is probably the most underrated EVOLVE match of the year.

This is true. He's worked a ton of promotions. Though a good chunk of his stuff is on Highspots or YouTube so he isn't a tough dude to track down.

I'm comfortable in saying that there's not someone doing the 2010s indie style better than Starr these days. Up until the third night of the tournament, that WALTER match from 16 Carat was the best match I saw all year.

He’s cooled off a lot I️ think after being in my top 3 for the first 5 months of the year, but for 2017 I️ would without a doubt say he’s been the babyface of the year. A kind of fire that can’t be matched. It’s so genuine and believable when he hits that next gear. Has high volume and great high end singles stuff against WALTER and Janela and some of the best tag team matches of the year in wXw. Lock for my top 15, possibly top 10

Best babyface of the year, or at least the best babyface who wrestled the most and had the most high-end matches. A good heel too with the Eddie Kingston feud that was easily one of the only highlights of AAW this year. Told compelling stories in wXw, CZW, and Beyond revolving around winning streaks, losing streaks, and a mixture of the two. Continued to bafflingly prove himself as one of the best deathmatch workers in the world. Had the best feud of the year that wasn't gang affiliated. Whether he's five matches deep in a blood rivalry or having a one-off in EVOLVE, Starr's one of the most endlessly watchable guys in the world to me. He takes a spotty, melodramatic style and leans into it in such a way that I can't help but chant along to the incessant drones of "this is awesome". Watching him lose again and again to WALTER has been heartbreaking and watching him try to destroy Joey Janela has been uncomfortable but no matter what this guy does, I can't look away.

I thought he kind of sucked in that WALTER match. His offense looked good, but his hambone acting really took me out of the match. It is hard to sustain drama when a guy is screaming LOOK HOW DRAMATIC THIS MATCH IS

It's definitely my biggest complaint about him, yeah, something I can't always get over. When it clicks with me, though, it makes for matches I love.

Cagematch has him with 159 matches (over 100 of them were singles matches) in 2017 which is a WWE level schedule. Most of the stuff I've seen from him hovers near very good to great and I haven't seen anything I didn't at least like from him. Really enjoyed the AAW feud with Kingston and really am looking forward to seeing blowoff match as soon as it's available.

To be honest, I won't be surprised if he doesn't make my list. The WALTER match from 16 Carat is indeed amazing and he's got some other good stuff against Riddle and Jay Freddie. But beyond that, nothing stands out all that much except a guy who manages to avoid indy tropes and has a few cool moves. A good wrestler, but probably not enough to make my list.

He's really played his way into my top 15, and very likely my top 10. Sure he can be hammy, but I'll have to say that I don't give a whole lot of fucks about that in a world where a substantial portion of indie guys don't sell at all. I'll take over the top facials over moving on to the next spot 100 out of 100 times, and I think he's shown himself to be as good or better a David v. Goliath worker as anyone currently active which is a style I love in wrestling. For a while I was sort of holding a weak live performance from early in the year against him, but I thought he did very well at the last NOVA show of the year as a literal last second fill in, so that black mark is kind of off of him in my eyes. If the match with Janela had the bell ring 5 second earlier it probably would have locked him down as a top ten guy, but he's a guy who would have multiple matches in my top 50, and a very high average performance rating, so it's not like he's not going to be in my upper tier.

So after much deliberation, I think he just barely makes the list. The WALTER matches are indeed great and I really dug the Shotgun title defense against Riddle in CZW. But there's still quite a bit of stuff of his that d isn't much different than your typical indie stuff (sort of the same problem Riddle has outside of most Evolve and Progress shows). But at his peak he's a great babyface and has some undeniable stuff under his belt.
