Probably my leading candidate for #1 right now. At worst he'd be top 3.
He's without question my favourite guy on the independents from wXw to Progress and now into his stuff in the US for Evolve (with PWG to follow). Amazing in both singles matches and his Ringkampf tags and trios. The 16 Carat Final match against Iija Dragunov is probably my MOTY. Whenever I get close to cancelling my wXwNOW sub, I'll watch the one match he has all month and then talk myself into keeping it for another month because I don't want to miss out on this guy. Axel leaving for WWE could of messed up his momentum with Ringkampf being the crown jewel in wXw, but he threw himself into his singles career and has been amazing for Progress' Atlas division.
He also has some good stuff coming up in the last few months of the year. Matches with ZSJ and Ricochet in PWG, The World Tag League and an Ambition match with Thatcher in wXw.

Easy top ten guy IMO. I still have a fair bit of WXW to catch up on but the 16 Carat run was an all time great and I think he's translated in the US instantly. Extremely underrated as a tag worker too.

Outside of tag matches against duds like the London Riots, I've yet to see a match this year from WALTER that wasn't good on some level. Even the Riddle matches that I don't like feature him beating the tar out of Riddle, so they make me happy as a clam.

Just from the limited matches I've seen from him this year, he's one of my current favorites and the reason I went to/endured the heat of Progress NYC. The 16 Carat stuff was eye opening and the final with Dragunov is in my top 20 matches this year and fairly close to top 10.

Just stopping in here to say everyone should make sure to watch WALTER/Thatcher from Inner Circle 4. Just as good as the high end stuff from this year’s AMBITION

This past weekend has practically locked #1 spot up for WALTER in my rankings; including Inner Circle he had five matches that I would all rate at very good at a minimum with the Rottweilers and Massive Product matches both being high end matches that had a different feel to each other.
Also had a really good match with Bobby Guns on the Fight Forever show that came out last week. Nothing on the level of WTTL weekend, but another feather in his cap that he's great working with the less experienced guys on their roster.
I think he has an unmatched output of very good-great matches, he excels at both singles and tag work and he's had a breakout year in terms of career opportunities. It's been a banner year for some WWE tag teams, yet WALTER has probably been involved in more great tag team matches than The Usos and The Bar have had, and that's with two different Ringkampf partners!

What a revelation discovering WALTER has been. Really good technical work and probably the most enjoyable person to watch clobber people. The violent Riddle feud is easily one of the best this year and he's had other tremendous outings against Dragunov, Yehi, Lee, and Sabre. The Sabre match in particular stands out with some fantastic storytelling, slick submission work, and hard-hitting strikes.

If I was watching more wXw I could see him in my top 5. He's already in my top 20, maybe top 15 based on his stuff in PWG, PROGRESS, EVOLVE and the 16 Carat. Just need to see more of his matches in his home country.

It happens every year even when I convince myself that it's not gonna happen, but what do you know: WALTER has overtaken Thatcher as my #1 after having Thatcher penciled in at the top for months. Most of that comes from my finalized top 200 matches of the year, where WALTER clocks in with a whopping four of my top ten matches. Hard to deny the high end volume there. Outside of match quality he marks off just about every box I could look for in consistency, variety, ability to elevate lesser work/workers, interesting character work, and volume of matches. He suffers a bit from sticking to one basic style (unless you want to argue that variations of the AMBITION setting), but even then he's able to apply it well to singles matches against other freakish giants (Lee, Cobb), singles matches against supermen (Riddle), singles matches against technical marvels (Thatcher, ZSJ), singles matches against fiery underdogs (Starr, Dragunov), singles matches against wily heels (Gunns), tag matches against super teams (Starr & Simmons, arguably Ki & Homicide), tag matches against established teams (Briscoes, all the PROGRESS tags), tag matches against aging veterans (Ki & Homicide), and tag matches against ratfaced heels who bit off more than they can chew (Gunns & Stone). I saw upwards of 40 WALTER matches in 2017 and not one of them made me think "yeah, I've seen this before". Most of them just knocked me on my ass.

It’s kind of a weird point and I’m on my phone and can’t type out the premise for it yet, but I think I’ve convinced myself he has to be either my number 1 or my number 3. I know. It’s weird.
