It's fucking crazy to say this, but he may have locked up a top 5 spot already on my list, and it's January. The Dream match from NXT this week was great, that Almas match tonight was an easy 5 from me and has possibly one more against him coming later this year, and the Ciampa match is looming as well. Things are looking very, very good for Johnny Wrestling this year

Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up number 1.

I'm about to run into a 2015 Sasha Banks/2016-2017 Kazuchika Okada problem with 2018 Johnny Gargano.
At tops, he's going to have 15 matches make tape but if this dudes going out there and absolutely killing it in all time classic bouts, I'm going to have no choice but to put him at #1, volume inflated spreadsheets be damned.

I was really hoping he was going to get called up so that his volume of televised matches dramatically improves, because the guy deserves to be a #1 contender (along with Almas) given his batting average for putting on high quality matches, but it's going to be a tough one to justify a spot that high on my list if he stays in the NXT bubble and only works around a dozen televised matches for the entire year.
He could get an Asuka type call up that happens later on in the year, but I'm not too sure how likely that is.

He's had the two best matches of the year. Volume matters but we'll remember 2018 for Johnny Gargano, and so he will have a very, very high spot on my list.

His average match rating in my spreadsheet this year is 4.69 stars out of 5.
That's ridiculous.
Volume matters to an extent but there's no way a guy with a lot of ***1/2-**** matches is touching a guy who's on this level.
Johnny's my number one unless he spontaneously combusts the second half of the year.

If volume matters to how you rate a guy, and I think for me it does, there's definitely a ceiling for NXT wrestlers. But man, when you look at the two Takeover matches in Philly and NOLA, coupled with the Almas match on TV, it's very hard to not consider Gargano for the top spot. And it's not like he did nothing else-his Takeover matches alone were all 4+ affairs even if they burned through the Ciampa feud way too fast. Curious what we get out of the apparent heel turn this week going forward, but it would take some very big things going wrong for him to not make my top 10 and be a candidate for a high spot amongst those ten.

I don't think I've ever not cared about someone that puts together consistently great performances.
Character work aside he's had an elite year but just nowhere near the volume to justify anything inside the top 20. Particularly because he won't have any real opportunities for the rest of the year either. He will have my match of the year bar anything ridiculous in the last 6 weeks cause by god Gargano/Almas was something else.

I'm normally a guy who favors volume but I really cannot NOT put Johnny in my top 5. He delivers every time I see him, even if that's less than other guys. He's just such a versatile performer and it's nice to see him have a great match in a more heel role tonight (even if his heel character outside of the ring is corny as hell).
