Has quietly had a great year. There is virtually no one in wrestling who is able to do what he does consistently which is deliver crazy, entertaining, highspot heavy matches that are probably overkill but still feel totally fulfilling and complete in their own ways. He's had some big time singles matches, but he really shines in random Lucha Brothers tags whether they be in the States or Mexico where his high pace, wild energy really adds a dynamic that feels completely unique. No flyer is as creative, eccentric, impactful and charismatic as him. Guys like Bandido and Flamita have aspects of what he has, and do certain things better, but there is a sort of manic nature to what Fenix does that puts him considerably above them in my eyes. Probably a sleeper top ten guy at this point and that's not at all what I expected coming into the year.

Fenix has been the best. Nobody else on the planet has the same great timing combined with the crispness and accuracy of his offense. His selling is great (it really stood out to me in that Laredo Kid match) which is part of why his comebacks seem timed so perfectly. He works the flashy offense into his matches so fluidly that nothing looks out of place. I've not really looked at my list but I am pretty sure he would be #1 on my ballot right now. Just an amazingly consistent output of fantastic matches. He never seems to take a night off and is likely going to be the highlight of any show you see him in. I have mainly just seen his Mexico work this year but I am sure he has had as many great matches in the U.S. indies. The AAA 3-way from a few weeks ago (an easy MOTYC) takes a format that I am extremely tired of and makes it work perfectly through, again, Fenix's great selling and comebacks. He has the great indie style showcase matches with Laredo Kid and Barbaro Cavernario (and the Titan one, too), the great trios work in CMLL, the two LA Park indie brawls (and the Arena Mexico LA Park brawl which is not on my list for some reason), the LU casket match - he is having more great matches in a year than most guys have in a career. He is really a generational type of talent and if this is not his prime I don't know how good he can get. PROMOTION NAME | NAME OF SHOW | DATE OF SHOW | MATCH | NOTES | RATING | LINK | Lucha Underground | The Temple | 2018 | Fenix vs. Mil Muertes vs. Jeremiah Crane | 3-way to the grave match, which means two people have to be put into caskets. Starts off a bit slow and is weirdly edited at times but FENIX DOES THE HIROMU STAIR BUMP and bleeds everywhere and is basically great in this. Far from a perfect match but Fenix and Muertes are great and turn this in to something worth watching | 4 |
| G21 | Gimnasio Municipal | 1/6/2018 | Fenix vs. Hijo de LA Park | Good match if nothing special but then they brawl at the end for real? Weird. Again, the match is fine. | 3 1/2 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BR-UaRg7gk | MLW | Orlando | 1/11/2018 | Penta O M vs. Rey Fenix | Not as competely unhinged as their AAW match last fall, but still a good, wild match. | 3 3/4 | youtu.be/xD4TcF2KMFk?t=27m3s | AAW | LaSalle, IL | 2/3/2018 | ACH vs. Fenix | A slower pace than I expected but some really great, intricate spots. Fun stuff. | 3 3/4 |
| Revolucha | Gimnasio Nuevo Leon Unido | 2/11/2018 | Fenix, Penta 0 M vs. Garza Jr., Ultimo Ninja | Fenix's offense is fantastic at the beginning of this, just nailing Garza Jr. in the face with pinpoint kicks no matter how awkwardly out of position he may be. The match drags a bit with all of the crowd brawling and the stupid plywood spots, but there is some really good stuff throughout. | 3 1/2 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qZESNG9088 | The Crash | Auditorio de Tijuana | 2/16/2018 | CIMA, Rey Horus, Xtreme Tiger vs. Penta 0M, Rey Fenix, Rey Mysterio | Starts off maybe in house show mode (which is still really good for these guys) but then really picks up with lots of fun, fast-paced stuff. | 3 3/4 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUsbE4qsyTE | G21 Meca | Arena Queretaro | 3/21/2018 | Caristico, LA Park vs. Fenix, Penta 0 M | The ropes came loose so we got shoot style Fenix with stiff kicks and LA Park throwing headbutts. Yeah, they played to the crowd but they also beat the hell out of each other and this was great. Maybe not as fast-paced as some of the Lucha Bros. other matches but really stiff and angry and violent. | 4 1/2 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=th1Lyx5fCxQ&feature=youtu.be | The Crash | WrestleCon | 4/6/2018 | Fenix vs. Flamita | Too short to be great but still really good. Lots of reversals, but not on the level of their matches from last year. | 3 3/4 |
| The Crash | Auditorio de Tijuana | 4/14/2018 | LA Park vs. Rey Fenix | Great match that saw them brawling all over the place. Great selling by Fenix throughout the match, and then really good comebacks. | 4 1/4 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0FpAQdzrIQ | The Crash | Palenque del Fex | 4/15/2018 | Fenix vs. Flamita vs. Bandido vs. Rey Horus | Spotty but everything looks great in this ESPECIALLY Fenix's offense. | 3 3/4 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_0JGZ-QrNQ | G21 | Lienzo Charro Rafael Molina | 4/27/2018 | Fenix vs. Bandido vs. Hijo de LA Park vs. Flamita | Good, spotty match. | 3 3/4 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5NURJZTNcY | The Crash | Auditorio de Tijuana | 5/19/2018 | PJ Black, El Mesias vs. Rey Fenix, Rey Horus | Fenix is selling great and just when you start to think "man, maybe Fenix's selling segment is dragging on too long" you realize if it didn't last that long you would not have been able to see him take whatever nutty bump he takes. Fenix is great here, as is Mesias as just a violent, brooding monster. My only complaint is that the structure of this match is not creative at all. It works, because the work is so good, but it could be more creative. | 4 1/4 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHNHCJVKKgk | G21 Torta Super Astro | Salon de la CNC | 5/27/2018 | Trauma I, Trauma II vs. Penta O M, Rey Fenix | This is fine if nothing special. Kind of short, kind of slow, but still 2 cool teams. | 3 1/2 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTws_6sYTD4&t=1s | CMLL | Arena Mexico | 6/8/2018 | Caristico, Mistico, Rey Fenix vs. Negro Casas, Barbaro Cavernario, Ultimo Guerrero | Fenix looked great, as did all the tecnicos but the rudos certainly helped them. | 3 3/4 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=CY-1WrEXKW0&feature=youtu.be&t=01h24m32s | CMLL | Arena Mexico | 6/15/2018 | LA Park, Volador, Rey Fenix vs. Rush, Terrible, Cibernetico | Did some idiot say last week's match was all brawling to the extent it was almost more of an angle? What idiot would say that? | 4 |
| The Crash | Auditorio de Tijuana | 6/16/2018 | Matt Riddle, Mr. 450 vs. Fenix, Daga | Fun, fast paced match. This is clipped, but just barely. | 4 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PfviRW_xlw | CMLL | Arena Mexico | 6/22/2018 | Negro Casas, Barbaro Cavernaro, Mr. Niebla vs. Fenix, Volador Jr., Hijo de LA Park | Fenix was great again and he matched up well with Negro Casas, but it left me wanting more. | 3 1/2 |
| CMLL | Arena Mexico | 6/29/2018 | Fenix vs. Barbaro Cavernario | WIld match. You know it is good. | 4 1/4 |
| MDA | Arena Coliseo Monterrey | 7/29/2018 | Fenix vs. Laredo Kid | Fun match with everybody's offense looking great and some good transitions. | 4 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaiMNMEkv84 | AAA | Palenque de la Feria Nacional De San Marcos | 8/2/2018 | Fenix vs. Bandido vs. Flamita | Amazing match that is what you would expect but also better than you expect as Fenix always is better in a match than you think he will be. | 4 1/2 |
| MEXA Wrestling | Arena San Juan Pantitlan | 8/4/2018 | Titan vs. Rey Fenix |

Fenix went from being a fringe top 25 to an almost guaranteed top 10 on my list if he keeps up his current pace. The ability he has to transition between traditional lucha style and American Indy style within a weekend is so seamless it's scary. The MLW tag title defense against ACH and Rich Swann from the other week just adds further to his case. At the start of the year he was a guy that I enjoyed watching on shows I happened to see, now everything he puts forward is a must watch because at this point his floor is "very good".

A guy I definitely need to expand my usual watching habits to see more of. As is, he's been good enough to hover near the top half of my list and I suspect watching him in more places will place him solidly there. Between his AAW matches and the main event of All In, might have had the most in ring highlights of anyone All in weekend.
