What a comeback year for the big man. After what was, to say the least, a critically panned year in the ring, he's put together one of his best years in a long time. Obviously a part of that amazing main event at SummerSlam, but also had the Extreme Rules 5-way main event which was pretty great. I was really high on the Brock match, and he's had some real TV bangers with the likes of Reigns and even Sami Zayn. I'd say he's definitely in my Top 20 and possibly even my Top 10.

I enjoyed his 2016 in NXT more than most did, but this year he feels more of a universal hit with fans up on the main roster. I think he's been excellent since the moment they involved him the Universal title picture on the build to Extreme Rules. Real shame he got injured when he did because I'd of preferred to see Joe take on Cena at No Mercy.

The year of the sprint!
This is Samoa Joe's best year in forever. Has a slight chance of making my Top 10. Depends on when he comes back and what he does when he's healthy again. Loved the Brock program. Loved the Brock match better than most.
Samoa Joe main evented Summerslam for the top championship in the WWE in 2017.
Think about that.
Amazing.

Not sure if he has a whole ton of volume, but his peaks have been surprisingly good considering his underwhelming run in NXT. Multiple good TV matches with Zayn and Reigns and good to great ppv showings at Extreme Rules, Great Balls of Fire, and Summerslam will probably be just enough to make my list.

Motivated Joe! You could nitpick that the bulk of his case relies on a hot three-month run of hoss fights: don't think he was much better or worse at tossing Sami around than any of the myriad others who've got to toss Sami around on the main roster. Well, life for the WWE upper-midcarder is mostly about hot three-month runs, and as a matter of taste I'd take the intense violence of Joe's matches from June to August over the reckless violence of Styles' matches from Rumble to Mania. Of course year-round consistency does matter (and reckless violence might be more sustainable if you don't put your back out) so I'll probably have AJ higher, but Joe should comfortably make my top 40.

Wonder if his injury will knock him off my list. I enjoyed him this year, but I do still think he's a better character/aura then a wrestler at this point. If I can find some house show gems he might be saved though, because I think my main issue is that his case is basically built on ~10 matches right now.

He's regained the aura he once had over a decade ago, but his stamina & physical limitations hurt him. I think he's still very good in sprint form as evidence in the Brock match (which I don't love, but think is pretty good) & the first Roman TV match way back in February. His best long match is with Roman a few months later in the spring which is excellent. I also liked him in the first few minutes in the Summerslam 4-Way. I will find a place to squeeze him in, but he certainly won't be terribly high.

Was counting up who was represented in my top 200 matches of the year and Joe surprised me by coming in at the teens. Most of that's with matches on the lower end of the list (highest ranked is #92), but when I'm looking for a ten minute banger Joe's there with a match against Reigns or Zayn or Lesnar. Dude carries himself as a bigger deal than he actually is, backing it up often enough that I'm often convinced he really is a monster despite being a tubby Hawaiian ten years removed from a major back injury. Ultimately I think that's the sort of thing that matters to me, not the fact that he had a bunch of matches I threw stars at.
