Another wrestler unfortunately bit by the "We have nothing for you" NJPW booking bug for most of the first quarter. His good if overly-long NJ Cup match with Elgin and banger with Henare were really the only things of note he did prior to the G1. Thankfully he stayed fairly busy with great RevPro matches against Sabre, Suzuki, and especially Keith Lee in his farewell match. And while he had an absolutely killer G1 and has another match with Kenny on the horizon, his lack of a noteworthy first quarter will most likely keep him out of the top 10.

I have him just inside the top 10 at the moment, as you say it took a while to get his year going but literally every singles match he has he kills it be it New Japan or Rev Pro. It was a real tight battle for G1 MVP for me between Ibushi and Ishii, but I think I gave the nod to Ishii in the end. The Goto, Omega and Ibushi matches are all sublime matches. Really looking forward to him FINALLY challenging again for the heavyweight championship 2 years after he beat Okada <_<
I'd say 'it's a shame he'll end his year tagging with Yano loads of times' but like hell am I watching that tournament so it won't effect my rankings.

He's only been relevant in New Japan for the G1 season, but his run was good enough to take him from just outside the top 100 thanks to his Rev Pro stuff and put him at 12th for me right now. Don't know how many more shots he's going to get in 2018, but if New Japan bothered to give him better push he could be in a lot of people's number 1 spots

I've enjoyed his 2018 slightly more than his 2017 when he was my number 11. His matches with Omega have all been excellent and he had one of the best G1s in the field. Still have a few matches of his to catch up on, so he may end up in my top ten.

With Ishii still delivering strong matches post-G1 while other contenders who started the year strong have slipped in output, he makes the top 10. His lack of a notable first quarter still keeps him out of the top 5, but he's just been too damn good the rest of the year to be denied a top 10 spot.
