Not liking top 10 wrestler of the year's chances of appearing on a lot of ballots but you all should be watching Abe. His Astronauts' partner gets a lot of the notoriety, Nomura is v good as well, but honestly, Abe is my top pick for the crew.
Abe is Sawa style BattlArts through and through...but better. He knows his way around a hard kick, knows how to approach antics, and knows how to not be too corny. That was on of my big issues with Sawa, had a lot of tools but took out the power drill when he just needed a few twists with a Phillips Head to do the trick.
His tag work with Nomura are his "best" matches but not my favorite performances. I think those are used as a good baseline, if you don't like those you don't like Abe. Then when you get to his singles stuff there is stuff to DIG INTO.
vs. Kazuki Hashimoto (BJPW 6/13/18) - Fun little meathead juniors match
vs. Hideki Sekine (HARD HIT 7/2/18) - Awesome little shooty match. Abe is not in the same weight class as Sekine but tries using speed and technique to find a way to victory
vs. Daiki Shimomura (BASARA 10/13/18) - Abe works a dude with a tale and has fun without going full CHIKARA
vs. Ikuto Hidaka (BASARA 11/17/18) - Feels like a battle of generations match. Starts off with things not quite clicking...then everything starts hitting flush and you feel like there was a weird meta at play and you're totally cool with it.
Oh, also watch the Nomura match from January which is Actually Great. Emphasizes both wrestlers strengths. SHOOTING!
